Due to the nature of content I must keep the names out of this blog. I recently sat down with the owner of entertainment Management Company. The company handles artists from a very famous family. I asked several questions of Peter including how he got his start in management and if he owned any other businesses. He shared with me the positives and negatives about artist management.
He got his start because someone suggested to him that as a businessman he would be good at managing talent. Through his strong ties with the family he was able to secure a few artist. His first was a rapper whose famous dad often interjects in the business side of things.
One of his main woes was the people you have to please to make deals go through. In management he explained how much babysitting and hand holding is involved. The artist has to be happy. There are times when you have to win over those closest to the artist to get them to trust in your business decisions. The other downside to this had to deal with being caught in between those close relationships between the family and the artist. That is when exercising good judgment has to be integrated.
He told me the most rewarding part of management was seeing your final projects come together. In addition to that you get to meet a lot of people. The ability to network when you know one successful artist is unlimited. In the entertainment field, one open door leads to another open door.
The interview made me question whether or not I could deal with the worse times in the field. I believe I can. The good seems to out weigh the bad if one can manage to stay professional. The only element I would have problem with is the “babysitting.”
